.

I was always the person that took care of others. I supported my mom, I took joy in being a father, I took in my nephew with no problem, and when Hazel was present in the physical form, I made sure every need of hers was met. Solana was slowly but surely being added to that list. I possessed this dominant desire to care for her in ways I knew she had never been cared for. Each time I gazed into her face, I spotted pain. Solana attempted to smile through all the heartbreak she’d endured, but I knew she was suffering on the inside.

That’s why I invited her to Dancing Waters Resort with my family. We all needed an escape, especially after Hazel’s death, and I felt Solana could use a break from her hectic life as well. We were at the water park area of the resort, and I watched as Solana spoke with Korey and Elijah. She was smiling and they were too before they both splashed her with water. She giggled and chased after them toward the slides. Their interaction triggered a grin to appear on my face. I tried to halt the smile that surfaced on my face but failed miserably. My feelings for Solana had bloomed into something I couldn’t quite describe. She was tough when she needed to be, but underneath her resilient layer was someone who had endured a lot of heartache. For reasons I couldn’t explain, I wanted to be the person to help her overcome all the emotional abuse that had been inflicted on her.

“Yeah, I do,” I admitted.

“I'm happy because I've been praying for God to send you a woman.”

My brows furrowed. “Why is that?”

“Because I've raised a good son, and I need you to have a good woman in your life. I feel like you deserve it.”

“Don’t get your hopes up too high, Mama. I'm still trying to figure Solana out.”

“My hopes are always high,” she laughed, but her face turned serious. “Thank you for bringing us here. I think this getaway was strongly needed to take our minds off of Hazel, especially for Elijah.”

Every time I heard Hazel’s name; my chest tightened. I still found it hard to believe that my sister was gone. Every day that I woke up, I was praying that her death was just a nightmare and that she was still laying in her room, watching her favorite TV shows. But like clockwork,
